October 2015 Meeting
October, 2015 Volume XIV April, 2016, Volume XV
On October 22, the BCRTA held the last meeting of a successful 2015. During 2015, we accomplished a great deal.
We presented our scholarship to Jordan Dawson from Eastern Local High School. Jordan, who is attending NKU, has sent us her first grades and a very nice note of thanks for the scholarship. She is representing BCRTA, Brown County, and Eastern High School well.
We continued to donate supplies to the Brown County Pre-K Program.
A new service project was added. Baby bottles are filled with loose change by members to donate to the Crisis Pregnancy Center. We recognize for children to learn, they must have proper nutrition early in life.
We happily welcomed four new members to our group. Becky Cropper, Evelyn Yockey, Gwen Miller, and Jane McKinney.
We had four interesting programs this year. A visit from the Christian Theatre Youth Choir who performed Gospel Music was thoroughly enjoyed. Kelly Barone from STRS joined us for an update on changes and additions to our retirement. Randy Overbeck , Western Area VP from ORTA presented “Teachers: The Real American Heroes.” Ellen Croswell from Croswell VIP Tours presented a program on short and day tours that are available to us. By the end of Ellen’s presentation we were all ready to pack a bag and get on board.
A donation was made to the Brown County Public Library to help bring well known author Mary Jane Clark to the Gaslight Theater for a book signing in April. We also have members who volunteered to work the event.
We amended and finalized the BCRTA Bylaws. (If you don’t have a copy they will be available at meetings or by mail)
We now have a membership directory. They are available online, or hard copies at meetings, or by mail.
BCRTA was awarded a certificate for placing in the top nine in the state for volunteer hours for 2014. Our volunteer hours numbered 2796. With the addition of new members and more participation of members in 2015, our volunteer hours numbered 3569. We are an industrious group.
Officers for 2016 and 2017 were elected.
Tommie Stout-President: r[email protected], Becky Cropper-Vice President: [email protected], Jan Crawford- Secretary: [email protected] , and Linda Lawwill-Treasurer: [email protected]
2016 Here We Come!:
Meeting dates and programs for the new year will be: April 28- Christian Theatre for Children’s Winter Choir, June 23- Sheila Maggard “History of Aprons: "Tie One On”, August 25- Deb Price/Carol Miller “What You Don’t Know About Education", and October 27- John Ruthven “John Speaks”.
This year, for the first time, members will be able to join ORTA as well as BCRTA at our local meetings. Local dues will remain ten dollars ($10.00) and ORTA dues will be thirty dollars ($30.00). Forty dollars ($40.00) for both. Members may, but are NOT required to join both.
We are pleased that Jackie Fowler is again catering our delicious lunches. After much encouragement from the group, she has raised the price. The price for the luncheon is now twelve dollars ($12.00). Anyone who has enjoyed a lunch prepared by Jackie, with the quality and quantity of the food, knows it is still a great price.
We will continue our service projects.
*Applications for the scholarship have been sent to all county high schools.
*School supplies will continue to be collected at each meeting for the BCESC Pre-K Program.
*We will continue to fill baby bottles with loose change for the Pregnancy Crisis Center. If you don’t have a baby bottle, bring in the change anyway. Bottles will be here for you to fill, and extra bottles will be available to take home.
Please continue recording your volunteer hours. It was surprising to see the diversity in the areas of volunteer hours. It is no surprise that many hours are in educational and church activities. Other areas included: The Humane Society, Senior Citizens, Meals on Wheels, Nursing Homes, Historical Organizations, Women’s Clubs, Garden Clubs, Toastmasters, Brown County Soil and Conservation, FFA, Extension Projects, Farmland Preservation, Food Service Contest, and political activities
We are still looking for volunteers to fill committees. Jeanette Preuth, Jean Grider, and Jan Crawford are making up the sunshine committee. Jeanette is sending birthday cards. She is using the dates in the new directory. Please check your birthdate to make sure it is correct. If not, let us know. A belated Happy Birthday to Jeanette, who celebrated on March 15.
Jean is sending get well and sympathy cards. If you know of anyone who needs a card, please let Jean know. Jan, who hand makes our cards, sends thank you notes.
Jeanette is also the chair of the Legislative Committee. The purpose of this committee is to keep up with news from ORTA and keep the group informed of important news or legislation.
We still need members to volunteers for committees. Jan needs help with the Archives Committee. This committee collects all newspaper articles, cards, photos, any material pertaining to the BCRTA. These items are to be preserved in scrapbooks for future reference.
We need to set up a membership committee. This committee needs to work with the president to help increase the membership of the group.
The Newsletter Committee needs members. Members take minutes of meetings and develop a newsletter. Usually five a year are sent out. Four are about meetings and the fifth one is sent at the beginning of the year. This newsletter is a combination of end of 2015, and introduction to 2016, therefore it is at least twice as long as normal. Jan and Tommie work on the newsletter, but need help.
So ends 2015. We begin 2016, hoping to make it a fun, and informative year.
DON’T FORGET: April 28, 2016 Brown County Educational Service Center 12:00 P.M.
For lunch reservations: call Phyllis (937) 392-1146 or email Tommie [email protected]
We hope to see you there!
