April 2016 Meeting
On April 28, the Brown County Retired Teachers’ Association held their first meeting of 2016. Twenty four members were present including one new member.. Welcome Gini Swope.
We opened with the pledge and prayer then lunch. Jackie Fowler was ill, so lunch consisted of subs, pizza, chips and drinks. Thanks to Sue Bohrer and Chris Davis for handling the setup and serving. It’s good to have folks to step up when there is a need. Jackie’s delicious meal was surely missed, but we are glad to hear she is well and will be with us in June.
Two pieces of correspondence were shared by our treasurer, Linda Lawwill. Jordan Dawson sent thank you notes to the treasurer, the president, and the entire group. Jordan, our 2015 scholarship winner, has successfully completed her first year at NKU.
Our second correspondence was from a former student of Catherine Owens. The woman made a monetary donation to BCRTA in Catherine’s memory and wrote a very touching letter expressing the impact Catherine had on her life. It was a wonderful memorial for Catherine. We all hope to be able to touch our students in that way. Importantly, she had shared these feeling with Catherine.
The program for the day was presented by the Christian Theatre for the Children’s Winter Choir. The choir consists of twenty students from Felicity, Bethel, Georgetown, Mt. Orab, Ripley, Russellville, and Sardinia, as well several home schooled students. Their ages range from seven to seventeen. They enthusiastically performed music from Broadway shows. What a great job they did! Our group thoroughly enjoyed listening to, watching, and interacting with these young people. Thanks to Dody Staker and Sandy Eversole for bringing them to us.
Again this year, BCRTA won an award for volunteer hours. With 3569 hours, we placed first in Region Four for number of hours per member. Winning the award is an honor, but the highest honor is the goodwill we spread throughout our communities. Keep up the good work.
The BCRTA Scholarship winner has been chosen. The winner of the four hundred dollar scholarship is Rachel Gibbons from Georgetown Junior-Senior High. Rachel plans to major in education at the University of Memphis. She and her parent(s) have been invited to attend the June 23, meeting to be presented to the group.
Invitations to visit BCRTA are being sent to 2016 retirees. What a difference from last year. So far we only have six new retirees. If you know any of these folks, or anyone who we have missed over the years please invite them to attend a meeting and see what we are all about.
Program for June 23rd is Sheila Maggard “The History of Aprons: Tie One On.”
Don’t forget to bring that special apron you have share or that special story you have.
