August 2015 Meeting
President Tommie Stout called the meeting to order, opening with the Pledge to the Flag followed by prayer by Sandy Eversole. There were thirty members and three visitors present today. Martha Henry, Mary Kay Fischer, and Randy Overbeck were with us from ORTA. There was also a political candidate with us today. The room was decorated with an end of summer/back to school theme by JennyLewis and Mary Williams. As usual our delicious meal was catered by Jackie Fowler.
We were asked to send a card to thank Ann for her years of service on her upcoming retirement from her position as Director of ORTA. Martha and Mary Kay presented a pin to Tommie Stout. Randy Overbeck is the Vice President for the western part if Ohio for ORTA. He reminded us that ORTA's primary function is to safeguard our retirement. He gave us a list of 22 reasons why we should join ORTA .
Our program today was presented by Dr.Randy Overbeck and was entitled " Teachers, the Real American Heroes". He spoke of three al teacher heroes. His speech was very meaningful.
The Secretary and Treasurer 's reports were presented and were approved.
We discussed our service projects that we currently have as well as the three potential service projects. Kamp Dovetail, the Barefoot School and Library in Haiti, and the Crisis Pregnancy Center are the three potential service projects. Kathy Marshall made a motion that we begin a project for the local Crisis Pregnancy Resource Center in Georgetown. Phyllis Paeltz seconded the motion. Members present voted to begin this project. We are encouraged to get a baby bottle and fill this with loose change. If we have a bottle filled by October we are to bring it to the meeting . The Barefoot School needs include sponsoring a child or helping to pay for booklets. We could also send small items with Betty Jodrey or others when they are visiting Haiti. Kamp Dovetail is a camp for children with special needs and operates with the help and support of many volunteers or we could donate items needed or sponsor a week of camp for a child. There will be more discussion on each of these at our October meeting.
We discussed the amendment change in or by laws that ORTA has recommended . Kathy Marshall and Linda Henry approved the amendment concerning the bylaw changes.
The Nominations Committee is working to secure nominations for officers for next year. Tommie Stout and Linda Lawwill have agreed to run again. Jan Crawford is willing to run for secretary unless there is someone else that desires the position. The committee is still looking for a Vice President. Elections are scheduled to take place at the October meeting.
We went over the chapter's current committees. Several of the committees could use more help. If you would be willing to help a committee, ask Tommie or one of the people on the committee.
Next executive meeting will be Sept.9th at 11:30 at Lake Manor Restaurant .
Before Carolyn Carr left the meeting today,a planter was presented to her as a thank you for her many years of dedication to the needs of our chapter. We invited her to come back and visit us often!!
Ruth Scott and Phyllis Paeltz made the motion that the chapter pay for the planter that was presented to Carolyn Carr. Those present voted to pay for the planter.
Evelyn Yockey spoke with us briefly concerning "Mentoring Program " she is involved in beginning through the ESC Office. This mentoring program will be working wit h the eighth graders in Eastern Local, Georgetown Exempted, Ripley Union Lewis Huntington, and Western Brown Local Schools. She encouraged us to get involved with this.
